Proverbs 7:26 Many are the victims she has brought down; her slain are a mighty throng
Solomon here, to enforce the cautions that he has given against the sins of adultery and lust, tells the story of a young man that was ruined by the enticements of an adulterous woman.
For me, this story reinforces the consequences of all sins, but especially adultery and lustful thoughts. I was brought back to Proverbs 6:27, “Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned?” This story shows that the sins of adultery and lusting in your heart will always have consequences.
I have never been propositioned like this young man. I am however, constantly bombarded by suggestive images. Our society seems to be in a race to the bottom. Competing to see who can be the most suggestive and get away with it. One needs tremendous effort not to get sucked into this maelstrom of sinfulness.
Today’s world is no different than 2000 years ago. Is the sin of the young man in this reading any more of a sin than looking at pornography or lusting in our hearts?
I have to be constantly vigilant to guard my eyes and mind. The wages of this sin and all sin is death. Jesus died for my sin. I don’t want to add any more to his burden.
Father, I know that only Jesus was without sin. We are all constantly being tempted to sin.
Remind me that each time that I do sin… there are consequences.
Renew in me a desire for your word as amour.
Replace for me unhealthy images with images of your beauty.
