Proverbs 9:10. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the Knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
This chapter discusses and contrasts “banquet” invitations offered by Wisdom and Folly. Both provide food, drink and invite all to attend. Both are trying to attract the same people. Wisdom’s banquet is prepared. It is set before people at a table. She cries out from the tops of the city. She sends her maidens out to invite people. She invites all to come and begin to understand. The meal is the entry into the house but not the reason to attend.
Folly’s approach and appeal is cheap, flamboyant and based on deceit. Folly offers only bread and water yet she claims her meal is sweet and pleasant. She spends no time preparing for her guests only calling out to those that pass by. Her allure is quick pleasure.
When it sounds too good to be true, it is too good to be true.
People are attracted to false claims. Just look at advertising scams, get quick rich scams, email scams, etc. People are always looking for the easiest path. Folly knows this. Folly does nothing but catch people “as they pass by”. She doesn’t care about presentation, quality or content. She knows that deceit and desire are all she needs. People get caught in her trap. The promise and allure of forbidden fruit has not changed since Adam’s time.
We all have to make a choice.
We all have to make a choice…follow the path of wisdom or folly. Wisdom is the path to Lord and all the blessings promised to us. Folly is the path that leads to evil and death. Only through knowledge and wisdom can we make good choices. This means we must remain in the Word. We must keep Him close to our heart. We must include the Lord in all aspects of our life.
Father help us to keep You included in all aspects of our life. Help us to keep You in our heart so we may understand how to keep on the straight path. Help us to not be tempted by the ways of the world that may provide initial pleasure but leads to failure and destruction.
